I think that "The Messenger" WAS in the show in the famously troubled Atlanta production, but was dropped when David Henry Hwang stepped in to rewrite the book.

Yeah, my gut says it was a David Henry Hwang decision. I have a feeling he wouldn’t be afraid to say “you know they’re about to suffocate, right?”
He complimented my stage directions once and I've been living off of that since 2018.
